Located in the heart of Campbell, this courtyard garden was designed to transform an underutilised outdoor space into a serene and functional retreat. The client envisioned a resort-style sanctuary that would complement the refined architecture of their townhouse while providing an inviting setting for entertaining and relaxation. With a focus on balance between structure and nature, this courtyard seamlessly integrates strong architectural elements with soft, dynamic planting and the tranquil presence of water.
At the core of the design, the courtyard seating area is framed by an off-form concrete wall, creating a contemporary backdrop for the rich plant life. The sculptural, deep green foliage of tractor seat plants provides bold contrast against the light grey concrete, while delicate Japanese maples introduce seasonal interest with its bright green summer foliage and vibrant autumnal hues. This interplay of structure and nature ensures that the courtyard remains visually compelling throughout the year.
A significant change in level is elegantly resolved with oversized steps that blend into the surrounding garden bed. A simple yet striking water feature, positioned to complement the nearby concrete wall, introduces movement and the soothing sound of flowing water. This feature serves as a focal point, drawing the eye through the courtyard and enhancing the seamless transition between levels.
The planting throughout the courtyard and surrounding spaces was carefully selected to contrast and soften the architectural forms, creating a lush, inviting atmosphere. Verdant greenery spills over edges, softening the hard lines of built elements, while layered foliage adds depth and complexity not often associated with Canberra’s cool climate. Thoughtfully curated species provide year-round interest, reinforcing the natural beauty of the space and resulting in a courtyard that is both visually striking and deeply restorative.
